Chapter 18
Riley
It wasn't watching as Kai hacked off Luis' dick that kept me awake the following nights. Nor the echoes of his screams bouncing off the walls as Kai squished his eyeballs in their sockets with his bare hands.
And it wasn't from the guilt that I had been the one to condemn Luis to the life of hell that kept me tossing and turning each night.
Fuck no, I didn't feel the slightest bit bad for what happened.
Why should I?
The man was a dirty rapist and the pain Kai had caused, well, Luis deserved to suffer through it every day for the rest of his life, if he even survived the night, which I wasnât sure he would have given how much blood he lost from his missing appendage, not to mention the beating Kai had given him beforehand.
No, the thing that kept me awake each night was the face of the girl who had been raped by that evil man. Iâd been expecting her to be inconsolable, to beg for Luis to be arrested. But she wasnât anything like that. Her eyes were empty of any emotion, and when she looked at me, it was like she was looking straight through me.
It was chilling.
There was no hysteria, she was stoic as she made her demand. She wanted to return to Mexico, and she wanted Kai to pay for her and her family to move out of the village her family lived in otherwise she was at risk of being sent back to America to work. She held her nerve as she told me to make it happen or she would find a way to report the illegal activity in the factory. She was very brave for a young girl, and in a way, reminded me of, well, me.
Behind the bullshit bravado though, she was terrified. When I walked closer to her, she flinched as if half expecting me to pull out a gun from the stupid skin-tight dress I was wearing, and fire a bullet into her. Iâd sat next to her and put my hand on her arm, in what Iâd hoped was a reassuring gesture, and sure enough, the dam broke. Tears streaked down her eyes as she begged for her mom and to go home. And fucking hell, didnât that break my heart.
Before I knew it, Iâd wrapped my arms around her and held her as my own tears fell. She was someoneâs daughter, maybe even someoneâs sister.
I didnât know how anyone would be able to get over something as traumatic as what sheâd experienced, and despite her pleas of just wanting to go home, she deserved more. So I told her not only would Kai agree to her returning to Mexico and moving her family to a different village, heâd pay for her to be educated in the best goddamn college in Mexico. Sheâd been stunned, and thatâs when she gave me her promise that she would never tell on Kai, managing a small smile when I said goodbye to her, but her eyes were still void of any emotion.
